Figuring out the end goal first, better done than perfect, your circle is everything

In this week's IMM I talk about why you should have the end goal in mind, why starting is better than waiting until you find perfection, and how the people you surround yourself with affects your life.

Figuring out the end goal first

I listened to Kevin Hart on the Diary of a CEO podcast this week and one of the things he spoke about was having the end goal in mind. If you have the end goal in mind you can make sure your actions today are in some way working towards that goal. Without direction, even the fastest movers don't get anywhere. Find your goal and then move. The goal can change and the course can move accordingly, but set your sights first, move, then alter course if necessary.

Better done than perfect

This follows a similar thought; so many of us are halted by "perfectionism". You can't publish that blog post because it "isn't good enough", you can't tell people about what you've been working on because it's not finished. These are untrue. The best place to start, is to start. Nobody had a perfect start, they refined the product/process over time. They had to make mistakes, find issues and move beyond them in order to get better. Stop searching for perfectionism (you'll never find it anyway), instead just make a start and refine along the way.

Your circle is everything

There's a common phrase that "you are the sum of the 5 people you spend the most time with". The idea is that you will always resort the mean of the people you spend time with as their behaviours become acceptable and you fall into the same behaviours. It would be extremely difficult to expect someone surrounded by alcoholics to not drink alcohol. It would also be rare to see someone truly surrounded by successful people without them also having some level of success.

We can alter our surroundings to match what we want to achieve. If you want to become well known in an industry, go to places where people from that industry hang out. If you want to become a better chess player, go find better chess players and socialise with them, if you want to finally make going to gym a consistent habit, become friends with people who already go to gym regularly.
